US Embassy in Iraq Office Hit by Three Rockets, No Casualties

Tension in Iraq has not yet been resolved. On Sunday (1/26) three rockets fell at the US Embassy. The incident occurred when the anti-government demonstration became more chaotic.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the first rocket fell in the embassy canteen at dinner. Two rockets that followed fell in the area adjacent to the first target. The AFP correspondent said he had heard a thump from the west bank of the Tigris River at 19.30 local time.

The attack resulted in one minor injury victim. The victim has been treated and can return to work.

“We know about the attacks that occurred in the international zone. We ask the Iraqi government to fulfill its responsibility to protect US diplomatic facilities, “a spokesman for the US State Department told CNN .

Until now, no group has claimed the attack. However, the US government has issued accusations. Their accusations do not go directly to Iran. They blame Iraqi militant groups sponsored by the Land of the Mullahs.

“Violence against US diplomatic facilities cannot be tolerated at all. We must be able to guarantee the safety of all US citizens in Iraq, “said Michael McCaul, a senior figure in the Republican Faction at the Foreign Relations Commission of the US House of Representatives.

The tension has not disappeared in Iraq after the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. The incident that was sparked by a rocket attack that killed a US contractor caused tension between Iran and the US to peak. However, Iran’s attention has been diverted to the crash of the Boeing 737-800 in Tehran.

In fact, many do not know that the anti-US masses in Iraq have not yet surrendered.

Iraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr had just led a mass rally to protest the US presence in Baghdad last week. Sadr, who a few months ago supported an anti-government demonstration, now said he preferred to campaign to drive out 5,200 US troops based in Iraq.

This certainly makes the Iraqi government dizzy. Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul Mahdi and Speaker of Parliament Mohammed Halbusi condemned the incident at the US Embassy. They seemed afraid that Trump would go wild again when he heard their representative was attacked.

“We will use all our resources to investigate the attack. We will capture who is responsible so that attacks like this do not happen again in the future, “explained Mahdi.

The Iraqi government not only has dependents to deal with the anti-US masses. They also have to face protesters demanding a change of government. Indeed, the protest group weakened after support from Sadr was withdrawn.

Shortly after the announcement, the authorities immediately attacked the tent protesters in Baghdad. The army began using live ammunition when driving out demonstrators on Sunday (1/26). As a result, one demonstrator was shot dead in Baghdad and another in Nasiriyah City. Even a group of unknown people set fire to a tent in Habbubi Square, Nasiriyah.

Even so, thousands of students still survive in these two cities. They are still demanding that the Mahdi regime be dissolved because it cannot overcome the problems of labor and corruption. “All of this is for the people of Iraq,” one of the protesters wrote on the poster.

They deny that the masses are acting in the interests of the opposition party. The death toll has reached 470 people since the anti-government demonstration broke out on October 1, 2019.
